AI Search & ChatGPT Ads
People are starting to ask AI systems what to buy instead of searching for it. That splits discovery into two separate lanes: what AI recommends for free, and what advertisers can pay to place inside the conversation. Nivaro builds for both, and we won't pretend one buys the other.
Search used to be a list. Now it's a conversation.
The traditional funnel and the AI funnel run on different logic. Traditional search hands a buyer ten blue links and asks them to do the comparing. AI search does the comparing for them, then hands over a synthesized recommendation, sometimes with a paid placement sitting underneath it, clearly labeled.
Search
A query, typed into a box.
Results
A ranked list of links to evaluate.
Website
The buyer visits, reads, compares.
Comparison
Tabs open across competitors.
Decision
Made after the buyer does the synthesis themselves.
Question
Asked in plain language, often with context attached.
Conversation
Follow-ups refine what the system understands.
Synthesis
The system reads multiple sources and compares for the buyer.
Recommendation
A shortlist, sometimes with a clearly labeled ad beneath it.
Decision
Made with less independent comparison than before.
Organic AI visibility is about earning a place in step three, the synthesis. ChatGPT Ads is about buying a labeled placement in step four, the recommendation. They sit next to each other in the same journey, but they are won in completely different ways.
Organic AI visibility and ChatGPT Ads are not the same service.
Earned, not bought
- Entity clarity: is it obvious who you are, what you sell and who it's for?
- Structured, citable content that AI systems can retrieve and quote
- External authority: mentions, reviews and sources beyond your own site
- Technical crawler access for AI retrieval bots
- No fixed cost, no guaranteed outcome, compounds slowly
Paid, labeled, separate
- A placement you bid for, shown below a ChatGPT response
- Clearly marked "Sponsored," visually separated from the answer
- Priced on CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized CPC
- Available only where OpenAI has opened self-serve access
- Cannot influence or replace the organic answer above it
The current product, described accurately.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT with US Free and Go users on February 9, 2026, and opened self-serve Ads Manager access to US businesses on May 5, 2026. Self-serve access has since expanded to the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. OpenAI launched ads in India on August 27, 2026, its second-largest market, starting with a cohort of 50+ brands through agency partners WPP and Omnicom, with self-serve Ads Manager access opening to Indian businesses on September 4, 2026 at a daily minimum of ₹725. Self-serve access for most of Europe is still not yet available; larger advertisers in new European markets can currently work through OpenAI's Ads team or agency partners.
Below the response
Advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, an image and a landing page link. Labeled "Sponsored" and visually separated from ChatGPT's own answer.
Context, not keywords
Ad selection weighs conversation context and intent, the landing page, ad title and copy, and advertiser-provided context hints. Personalization signals apply only if the user has enabled them.
CPM, CPC or oCPC
A relevance-weighted, second-price auction. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids of roughly $3 to $5 in the US; daily minimums vary by country and currency.
Free & Go users only
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see no ads. Ads never appear for accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, or in Temporary Chats.
How a ChatGPT Ads account is actually organized.
Campaign
Objective (CPM, CPC or oCPC), budget, dates, target countries and platforms. This is where the business goal and spend ceiling live.
Ad group
Focused on one product theme, with context hints describing who it's for and when it's useful. Hints guide matching, they are not exact-match keywords.
Ad
Title, copy, image and landing page. OpenAI's own guidance favors clear, specific, benefit-focused messaging over a catchy line.
Build the conditions that make a brand easy to understand and retrieve.
No agency can currently guarantee an AI citation. A 2026 academic survey of 45 studies on generative engine optimization found no reviewed technique with a stable, cross-platform, causal effect on organic discoverability, and warned that citation-focused rewrites can sometimes hurt retrieval instead of helping it. So Nivaro doesn't sell citations. It sells the fundamentals that make citation more plausible.
Is it obvious who you are?
Consistent naming, clear organization schema, a coherent story across your site, reviews and mentions. AI systems synthesize from multiple sources; contradictions between them make a brand harder to summarize confidently.
Can a system actually extract an answer?
Direct answers near the top of a page, specific claims over vague ones, clean headings, and structured data that describes what a page is actually about.
Does anyone else vouch for you?
Reviews, press, case studies and third-party mentions. AI systems weigh corroboration across sources, not just what a brand says about itself.
Can AI systems actually reach the page?
Checking robots.txt and server rules against AI crawlers. A page blocked from retrieval can't be cited, no matter how well it's written.
The DISCOVER framework.
Seven stages, connecting organic AI visibility, ChatGPT Ads, landing pages and measurement into one operating model instead of three disconnected projects.
Audit
Where does the brand already get mentioned, cited, or missed across AI systems and traditional search?
Crawlability
Can AI crawlers and search bots actually reach the pages that matter?
Content architecture
Entity clarity, structured data, and content built to be extracted, not just read.
External authority
Reviews, mentions, and sources beyond the brand's own site.
ChatGPT Ads, where eligible
Campaign, ad group and creative structure, built on real platform mechanics.
Landing page match
The page a click lands on has to answer the exact question that was asked.
Evaluate & Report
Platform metrics kept separate from what Nivaro can actually attribute to revenue.
ChatGPT Ads creative is not a smaller Google ad.
OpenAI's own creative guidance leans toward clear, specific, benefit-focused copy over a catchy line, and toward a diverse set of title and copy variations per offering rather than one polished message. That's a real shift from keyword-triggered search ads or scroll-stopping social creative.
The ad has to make sense as a response to what someone was just discussing, not just to a keyword.
Clear, useful details about the offer beat a catchy line the system can't evaluate for relevance.
Multiple distinct title and copy angles per offering, so the system has more chances to find a relevant match.
OpenAI's policy rejects misleading or inconsistent ads. Accurate representation isn't just ethics here, it's eligibility.
The click has to land on the actual answer.
A user in a conversation asked a specific question. If the ad click lands on a generic homepage, the thread breaks. OpenAI's own guidance is explicit about this: link to the most relevant destination, not a default page, and make sure the landing page doesn't block OpenAI's crawlers.
What's actually measurable, and what isn't yet.
What Ads Manager reports
- Impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM
- Click-through conversions, via Pixel and Conversions API
- Supplemental one-day view-through conversions, reported separately
- UTM and dynamic URL parameters for external analytics
- 24 to 48 hour reporting lag on attributed conversions
What we layer on top
- Blended CAC across ChatGPT Ads, Meta and Google, in one dashboard
- Qualified-lead and downstream revenue tracking where connected
- Organic AI-mention monitoring, tracked separately from paid metrics
- Honest labeling: a platform metric is never presented as a revenue number
Advertising does not buy an organic recommendation.
Ads are separate from answers
OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the ChatGPT model, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter its responses.
A sponsored label is not an endorsement
Seeing an ad doesn't mean OpenAI recommends the advertiser. Ads are paid placements, clearly marked, and shown alongside, not inside, the answer.
Organic visibility is not for sale
Nivaro's ChatGPT Ads work and its organic AI visibility work are two separate services with two separate outcomes. Buying one does not grant the other.
Not every brand should start here yet.
D2C and ecommerce brands already spending on Meta or Google, whose customers research before buying, and who sell into a market where ChatGPT Ads is self-serve. India qualifies from September 4, 2026; Nivaro is scoping India launch campaigns now.
Brands in the remaining markets where ChatGPT Ads still isn't self-serve, mostly Europe. Organic AI visibility work has no eligibility gate; it's worth starting regardless.
Brands with real reviews and press that AI systems still don't surface, usually because the content or entity signals aren't structured for retrieval.
Brands with no paid-media discipline yet, or who want a guarantee of AI citations. Neither exists as a starting point here.
We haven't run ChatGPT Ads case studies. Here's why that's stated, not hidden.
On the organic side, Nivaro has done AI-visibility work for a client under an NDA that covers both the brand name and the results, so neither is publishable here. We're not offering that as a case study, just noting it exists, since the honest version of "we've done this before" doesn't require a number we're not allowed to show you.

Want an honest read on where you stand?
We'll tell you what's real, what's early, and what to ignore for now.
It depends on where the buyer is deciding.
| Dimension | ChatGPT Ads | Meta Ads | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| User mindset | Researching, mid-conversation | Scrolling, low intent | Actively searching, high intent |
| Discovery environment | Conversational, synthesized | Visual, social feed | Ranked list of links |
| Relevance signal | Context hints + conversation intent | Interest and behavior targeting | Keyword match |
| Creative format | Title, copy, one image | Video, carousel, static | Text, Shopping feed, PMax assets |
| Best use case | Reaching someone already comparing options in-chat | Creating demand someone didn't know they had | Capturing demand someone already has |
None of these is universally better. Meta creates demand, Google captures it, and ChatGPT Ads reaches someone while an AI system is actively helping them decide. The right mix depends on the buyer's stage, not a platform's marketing.
Before launching, check these.
Known, likely, and genuinely unknown.
Not prediction theater. A plain separation of what's confirmed, what's a reasonable bet, and what nobody, including OpenAI, has settled yet.
- ChatGPT Ads is live and self-serve in 10 markets, including India from September 4, 2026, expanding on a stated phased rollout.
- Ads are structurally and contractually separate from ChatGPT's answers, per OpenAI's own principles.
- No published GEO technique has a proven, stable, cross-platform effect on organic AI citation.
- More markets, particularly across Europe, will get self-serve access over time, though no date is confirmed.
- Ad formats and targeting options will expand as the platform exits beta.
- Entity clarity and structured content will keep mattering more as AI retrieval improves.
- Whether ChatGPT Ads CPCs stay competitive with Meta and Google as more advertisers enter.
- How much AI-driven discovery actually shifts D2C purchase behavior at scale, versus supplementing search.
- Whether a durable, honest "AI SEO" discipline emerges, or whether it stays closer to fundamentals plus luck.

Is Your Brand Ready for ChatGPT Ads? A Readiness Checklist
Twelve checks before you launch, not after.
No. OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the ChatGPT model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter its answers. Paying for a ChatGPT ad does not buy or influence an organic recommendation.
No, and any agency that promises this is overclaiming. Nivaro builds the entity clarity, content structure and crawler access that make citation more plausible, not certain.

CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized CPC, set by advertiser bids in a relevance-weighted auction. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids around $3 to $5 in the US. There is no fixed rate card.
Entity clarity and structured content work for organic visibility, plus ChatGPT Ads campaign setup and management in markets where the platform is self-serve.
