Is ChatGPT Ads Available in India? Yes, From September 4

OpenAI launched ads in India on August 27, 2026. Here's exactly what went live, what opens next week, and what to do before then.

Editor's note, Aug 29, 2026: this article originally reported that ChatGPT Ads self-serve access was not yet live in India. That changed within days. This version reflects the actual launch.

The current answer: yes, from September 4

OpenAI launched ads in ChatGPT for India's Free and Go tiers on August 27, 2026, its second-largest market by weekly users. Self-serve Ads Manager access for Indian businesses opens on September 4, 2026, at a daily minimum spend of ₹725. India joins the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea as a self-serve market.

What actually launched on August 27

The initial phase isn't wide open self-serve yet, it's a managed rollout: OpenAI started with a cohort of 50+ brands, run through two named agency partners, WPP and Omnicom, who handle strategy, creative, measurement, brand safety and execution. The partnerships are non-exclusive; OpenAI has said it will add more agency partners as the programme expands. Ads appear below ChatGPT responses, labeled "Sponsored" and visually separated from the answer, the same format used everywhere else the product has launched.

What opens September 4

From September 4, Indian businesses can sign up directly through Ads Manager rather than going through an agency partner. The published daily minimum is ₹725 (roughly $7.60), consistent with the rate OpenAI had quietly listed in its campaign documentation even before the India launch was announced. India's Go plan, the paid ad-supported tier, is priced at ₹399 a month; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free.

What doesn't changeAdvertisers still don't get access to user conversations, chat history, memories or personal details, only aggregate performance data like impressions and clicks. And per OpenAI's own stated policy, ads still cannot influence, shape or purchase an organic ChatGPT recommendation, launch cohort or not.

Who can actually advertise right now

Between August 27 and September 4, the practical path for most Indian brands is through WPP or Omnicom rather than a direct self-serve signup. If you're not already a client of either, the honest move is to wait a week for self-serve rather than chase a workaround through the agency-partner channel for a spend level that doesn't justify it.

What to actually do before September 4

Get the fundamentals in place now so the account isn't scrambling on launch day: tracking (Pixel and Conversions API) installed and tested, landing pages that match a specific offer rather than defaulting to the homepage, and a first round of context hints and creative variations drafted. None of that depends on the account existing yet. Organic AI visibility work also has no eligibility gate at all, entity clarity and crawler accessibility are worth starting regardless of ad platform timing.
