Is Your Brand Ready for ChatGPT Ads? A Readiness Checklist

Twelve checks worth running before your first campaign, drawn from OpenAI's own setup documentation.

Most ChatGPT Ads mistakes aren't creative mistakes, they're setup mistakes: the wrong objective chosen, context hints too vague to help matching, a landing page that blocks the exact crawler that needs to reach it. None of this is exotic. It's just easy to skip when a platform is new.

1. Confirm market eligibility first

Self-serve Ads Manager access is currently live in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. India joins that list on September 4, 2026, following an initial agency-partner launch cohort on August 27. Everywhere else, mostly Europe, is not yet self-serve. Check the current list before planning a budget around it.

The readiness checklist

01
Market eligibility confirmed on OpenAI's current Ads Manager availability list, not assumed from an old article.
02
Campaign objective chosen deliberately: CPM for reach, CPC for traffic, oCPC for a tracked conversion event.
03
Ad groups split by genuinely distinct product themes, not lumped into one broad group covering everything you sell.
04
Context hints written as real, specific use cases and needs, not single vague keywords like "shoes."
05
Creative variations, multiple distinct title and copy angles per offering, since OpenAI's own guidance favors coverage over one polished message.
06
Landing pages matched to the specific offer, never defaulted to a generic homepage.
07
Crawler access confirmed: landing pages must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot.
08
Tracking live, Pixel and Conversions API installed, with the correct conversion event attached before traffic starts.
09
UTM parameters set for cross-referencing Ads Manager data against your own analytics tools.
10
Brand safety review done, confirming the category isn't restricted from sensitive or regulated placements.
11
Budget type decided, campaign-total or daily, since some conversions between the two aren't reversible.
12
Reporting expectations set, 24 to 48 hours of lag on conversions is normal, not a broken pixel.

The one item people actually skip

Crawler access. OpenAI's own advertiser guidance is explicit that landing pages must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot, and it's the single easiest thing to get wrong because most robots.txt files were never written with these bots in mind. If your developer set up crawler rules before 2026, it's worth an explicit check rather than an assumption.

Why this matters twiceThe same crawler accessibility that ChatGPT Ads requires for landing pages is also the baseline requirement for organic AI visibility. Fixing it once benefits both. See the technical checklist for the full picture.

What happens if you skip these

Not a rejected campaign, usually, more often a live campaign that quietly underperforms: broad context hints matching poorly, a homepage landing page breaking the conversational thread, conversions that never get measured because tracking was an afterthought. The checklist isn't bureaucracy, it's the difference between a fair test and a wasted one.
