ChatGPT Ads: The Nivaro Field Guide

Everything currently confirmed about ChatGPT Ads in one place: format, availability, product feeds, cost, measurement and limitations, sourced and dated.

Last verified Aug 29, 2026 This guide is updated when ChatGPT Ads changes materially, not on a fixed schedule. Every claim below is labeled OFFICIAL (from OpenAI's own documentation), INDUSTRY OBSERVATION (credible third-party reporting, not yet in OpenAI's own docs), or NIVARO STRATEGY (our own recommendation, not a platform fact). If something here looks out of date, it's worth telling us; this category moves fast.

Most "ChatGPT Ads guides" online are either outdated within weeks or padded with speculation. This one is scoped narrowly: what's actually confirmed, what we've applied it to, and what we still don't know. It's the reference we send clients before their first campaign, not a sales pitch.

The basics, confirmed

OFFICIAL. Ads appear below a ChatGPT response, never inside it, labeled "Sponsored" and visually separated. Each ad includes an advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, an image, and a landing page link. Ads may appear for users on Free and Go plans only; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts never see them. Ads don't appear in Temporary Chats or, during this test, the ChatGPT Atlas browser.

Current availability

OFFICIAL. Self-serve Ads Manager access is live in 10 markets as of this check: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and India (self-serve from September 4, 2026, following an August 27 launch through agency partners WPP and Omnicom). Self-serve access for all 31 countries in OpenAI's Europe expansion is still "Coming Soon"; larger European advertisers can currently work through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team or an agency partner.

Product feed campaigns: the one D2C brands should know about

OFFICIAL. Retail advertisers can upload a product catalog and run feed-based campaigns, similar in structure to Google Shopping. OpenAI's own documentation states feed ads "have been among the strongest-performing ads in our program to date." Feeds upload via CSV/TXT, a hosted URL, or SFTP; products from a feed are only eligible to appear in ads during this beta, explicitly not in organic ChatGPT conversations.

INDUSTRY OBSERVATION. Multiple outlets, including Digiday with verified screenshots, report these feed campaigns can render as a multi-product carousel, several items shown side by side in one sponsored unit, with OpenAI's system deciding automatically whether a single ad or a carousel appears for a given conversation. This mechanic isn't spelled out in those exact terms in OpenAI's own help pages as of this check, so it's labeled as credible reporting, not confirmed platform documentation.

Why this matters for D2C specificallyThis is the closest thing to Google Shopping that ChatGPT Ads currently has, and it's the format Nivaro would test first for any catalog-driven brand. The feed spec discipline is the same muscle behind Merchant Center feed hygiene, not a new skill.

The intelligence table

A single reference for what's confirmed right now. Sourced, dated, and meant to be rechecked, not memorized.

What it costs

OFFICIAL. A relevance-weighted, second-price auction. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids around $3 to $5 in the US. Daily minimums vary by country and currency, India's is ₹725. There's no fixed rate card, and no independent benchmark yet exists for what a "good" CPC looks like by category, the auction is too young for that data to be meaningful.

Creative and landing pages

OFFICIAL. OpenAI's own guidance favors clear, specific, benefit-focused copy over a catchy line, and a diverse set of title/copy variations per offering over one polished message. Landing pages must link to the most relevant destination, product or collection pages, not a default homepage, and must not block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot.

NIVARO STRATEGY. We treat this the same as any other paid landing page discipline: the page has to answer the specific thing the ad promised, tested the same way we test any other conversion surface.

The full walkthrough of each item is in the readiness checklist article.

Known limitations, stated plainly

  • Product feed campaigns are beta; feed products don't appear in organic ChatGPT answers, only paid placements.
  • No independent, mature CPC/CPM benchmark exists yet by category, the auction is too new.
  • Self-serve access still excludes most of Europe as of this check.
  • Reporting has a 24-to-48-hour lag; real-time optimization isn't currently possible the way it is on Meta or Google.
  • Nivaro has not yet run a ChatGPT Ads campaign to completion; see the honesty note on the AI Search service page for what that does and doesn't mean.
