What Are ChatGPT Ads and How Do They Work?
A plain explanation of the current ChatGPT Ads product, sourced from OpenAI's own documentation instead of speculation.
ChatGPT Ads is real, live, and still young. OpenAI began testing ads with US Free and Go users on February 9, 2026, and opened self-serve Ads Manager access to US businesses on May 5, 2026. As of this article's last check, self-serve access has expanded to the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. This is what the product actually does, sourced from OpenAI's own Help Center, not from a marketing deck.
Format and placement
Ads appear below a ChatGPT response, never inside it. Each ad includes an advertiser name, a favicon, a title, a short description, an image and a landing page link. OpenAI labels every ad "Sponsored" and visually separates it from the chat model's own answer.
How relevance actually works
There's no exact-match keyword bidding here. OpenAI's ad system weighs the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad's landing page, title and copy, and advertiser-provided context hints, which describe the conversations, topics or needs where an ad might be useful. If a user has ads personalization enabled, select signals from their broader ChatGPT experience can also factor in. Context hints are explicitly not exact-match controls; they guide matching but don't guarantee an ad shows for any specific conversation.
Pricing: CPM, CPC and oCPC
Advertisers choose one of three campaign objectives. CPM optimizes for reach and impressions. CPC optimizes for clicks. oCPC (conversion-optimized CPC) still charges per click but tunes delivery toward users more likely to complete a tracked conversion. Selection runs through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, and OpenAI's own guidance suggests starting CPC bids around $3 to $5 in the US, with country-specific daily minimums elsewhere.
| Objective | You pay for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | Every 1,000 impressions | Reach and awareness |
| CPC | Each valid click | Driving traffic to a site or product |
| oCPC | Each valid click, delivery tuned to conversions | A specific tracked outcome after the click |
Who actually sees these ads
Ads may appear for users on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see no ads at all. OpenAI also does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, and Temporary Chats never display ads.
What ChatGPT Ads does not do
This is the part worth repeating clearly: OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the ChatGPT model itself, and that advertisers have no ability to shape, rank or alter its responses. A sponsored placement is not an endorsement, and it is not a purchased organic recommendation. If an agency tells you ChatGPT Ads can influence what ChatGPT recommends for free, that claim contradicts OpenAI's own stated policy.
Is it worth testing yet
Depends entirely on two things: whether your market has self-serve access, and whether your customers actually research inside ChatGPT before buying. If the first isn't true yet, the honest move is to wait or work with an OpenAI Ads partner, not force a workaround. If it is true, this behaves less like a keyword auction and more like reaching someone mid-decision, which changes how the creative and landing page should work too.
