How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost? CPC, CPM and Minimum Spend Explained

The actual pricing mechanics: bidding, the auction, suggested starting bids, and country-by-country minimums.

There's no published rate card for ChatGPT Ads, and anyone quoting you a fixed CPC as a platform-wide standard is guessing. What OpenAI does publish is the mechanics of how pricing actually works, and that's specific enough to plan a budget around.

Three ways to pay

Advertisers choose a campaign objective, and the objective determines both pricing and how delivery is optimized. CPM charges per 1,000 impressions and suits reach and awareness goals. CPC charges per valid click and suits driving traffic. oCPC, conversion-optimized CPC, still charges per click but tunes delivery toward users more likely to complete a specific tracked conversion event.

How the auction actually works

Advertisers set a maximum bid at the ad-group level, a max CPM for Reach campaigns or a max CPC for Clicks campaigns. OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted, second-price auction: the system aims to maximize both advertiser and user value, not simply award the placement to the highest bidder. Ads Manager can also show bid-strength guidance indicating whether a given bid is likely to be competitive.

OpenAI's own starting-point guidanceFor CPC campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of roughly $3 to $5 USD per click in the US. That's a starting point for testing, not a market-wide benchmark; actual competitive bids move as more advertisers enter a category.

Daily minimum spend, by country

Campaigns can run on a campaign-total budget or a daily budget. Daily budgets have a country-specific minimum, tied to the ad account's billing currency:

CountryDaily minimum
United States$25 USD
United Kingdom£15 GBP
Canada$25 CAD
Australia$25 AUD
New Zealand$25 NZD
Mexico150 MXN
Brazil40 BRL
Japan2,500 JPY
South Korea25,000 KRW
India₹725 (self-serve from Sept 4, 2026)

India's minimum was published in OpenAI's campaign documentation before the market even launched, and that preparation paid off: ads went live in India on August 27, 2026, with self-serve access opening September 4 at exactly that ₹725 daily minimum.

What actually changes what you pay

Competitive density in your category, how tightly your context hints and creative match real conversations, and which objective you choose. A broad, vague ad group competing with dozens of advertisers for generic attention will cost more per outcome than a narrow one built around a specific, well-described use case, the same dynamic that shows up in every auction-based ad platform.
