Meta Ads

What Are Meta Ads? A Simple Guide for D2C and Ecommerce Brands

Meta Ads are paid ads on Facebook and Instagram. Here is how they work, what they cost and how an online store can use them, in plain English.

Quick answerMeta Ads are paid ads shown on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta's partner apps. You choose a goal such as sales, set a budget and an audience, and pay through an auction. For an online store, they are used to find new buyers and to remind past visitors to come back.

What Meta Ads are

Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Meta Ads is the system that lets a business pay to show ads on those apps. You do not buy a fixed space. You tell Meta what you want, such as sales or leads, and Meta shows your ad to people it thinks are most likely to take that action.

Think of it as a very fast, very targeted billboard that you can switch on, measure and change every day.

Where your ads show up

Meta calls these spots placements. The main ones for an online store are:

  • Feed: the main scroll on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Stories: full-screen ads between friends' stories.
  • Reels: short vertical video, which is where a lot of attention is now.
  • Other spots: Explore, search results and partner apps.

You can let Meta choose placements automatically or pick them yourself. Beginners usually do better letting Meta choose, because it moves your money to where results are cheapest.

How Meta Ads work, in four steps

01
Pick a goal. For an online store this is usually Sales. Meta then looks for people likely to buy.
02
Set a budget and audience. You choose how much to spend per day and who to reach, such as location and age.
03
Add your creative. This is the image or video, the text and the button that sends people to your product page.
04
Meta runs an auction. Every time someone opens the app, Meta decides which ad to show them. You pay based on that auction.

What you actually pay

Meta shows results using terms you will see everywhere. CPM is the cost to show your ad 1,000 times. CPC is the cost per click. CPA or cost per purchase is what you pay to win one order. As a store owner, cost per purchase and return on ad spend are the numbers that matter most. We explain the rest in our guide to Meta Ads metrics.

When Meta Ads are a good fit

  • Your product is easy to understand from a photo or short video.
  • You can tell a buyer what makes you different in a sentence.
  • Your store loads fast on a phone and checkout works.
  • You have a clear offer, such as a bundle or a first-order incentive.

Mistakes beginners make

01
Starting ads before tracking is set up, so no one knows what sold.
02
Changing the budget and ads every day, which stops Meta from learning.
03
Sending people to the homepage instead of the product they saw.
04
Judging an ad after one day of data.

Frequently asked questions

Are Meta Ads the same as Facebook Ads?
Mostly yes. Facebook Ads is the older name. Today the ads are managed through Meta and can show on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and partner apps from one place.
Do I need a Facebook account to run Meta Ads?
You need a Facebook Page for your business and a Meta ad account. You can also connect your Instagram account so ads can show from your Instagram profile.
How much do Meta Ads cost?
There is no fixed price. You set a budget, and the price you pay depends on an auction that reflects competition, your audience and how good your ad is.
Are Meta Ads good for small online stores?
They can be, especially for products people can understand in a glance. They work best when your tracking is correct and your product page is ready to convert visitors.
